Metals-In Brief

This is a brief note on metals and it will help you remember the important points.

A metal can be defined as an element or a compound that easily conducts both electricity and heat.
Some examples of Common metals are Iron(Ferrum),Copper(Cuprum),Nickel,Aluminium, etc.

Most metals are solid at room temperature.Mercury,a well known metal used in thermometers is liquid at room temperature. Most metals also have a high melting point. But Galium and Cesium are exceptions as they melt easily at about 86 F.

Metals have many properties which are
  • Chemical Property
  • Physical Property
  • Mechanical Property And
  • Electrical Property
Metals can be classified into the following groups
  • Base metal-The chemical term Base metal is any metal that oxidizes or corrodes easily
  • Noble Metals-Metals that are resistant to oxidization or corrosion.
  • Ferrous metals-Metals that contain Iron as element, alloy or compound.
  • Precious metals-Rare metals which have high value
